Thanks to social media platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter, celebrities are on display more than ever before – and are providing an endless amount of celebrity gossip and entertainment news for publishers to cover. And now that it’s awards season, the entertainment news world is in full swing, with nominations and winners, scandals and reactions that audiences want to know about. So what’s the best way to tell these star-studded stories? Video, of course. Video creates an immersive experience for entertainment news audiences– it gives them a taste of the red carpet themselves, and a chance to share emotions and experiences with their favorite celebrities.
In this post, I’ve broken down the best practices used by the Wibbitz editorial team to cover entertainment news during its busiest season (and all other seasons, for that matter!) with glamorous and exciting videos that emulate the stars themselves.
Planned Events: Cover all the angles
When major events like the Oscars, Fashion Week, and Coachella are on the public’s radar, audiences will want the inside scoop. We make sure that video coverage is planned in our editorial calendar for announcements and expectations leading up to the event, highlights during the event, and reactions following to make sure audiences are getting the full experience. It’s also important to use the most relevant media footage. If we’re talking about a movie, there’s nothing better than seeing parts of it. If we’re recapping an awards show, then we’ll feature the Tweets and Instagram posts. Here are some great examples of our Golden Globes video coverage before and after the event:

Once our editorial calendar is fully prepped for major event video coverage, it’s much easier to react to unexpected news stories – which tend to happen a good amount in the unpredictable world of celebrity gossip and culture. As soon as a new story breaks, it’s important to inform audiences as soon as possible with the most essential (and accurate) facts, and relay the news through short, quick, to-the-point videos. Then, we will create follow-up videos that dive deeper into the story. The sound in an entertainment news video is very important since it sets the tone of the story, and makes the viewer feel involved and engaged. For the same reason, it’s just as important to include original soundbites from interviews, speeches, etc. Our Control Room makes it easy to add sound to each story, according to the mood that we would like to emulate. Since most stars these days can be found on social media platforms, the same is true for their fans – it’s possible that your video’s sound may be on mute for most of your target audience. It’s important to make sure that your video grabs their attention with or without sound by implementing dynamic transitions, colorful text overlays, and user-friendly design. We try to change up the look of each video (while still sticking to brand requirements) by using different styles for quotes, titles, descriptions, and adding highlights to important keywords. When it comes to entertainment news videos, I tend to throw on the Control Room’s Dynamic Theme, which automatically packages videos with fun and flashy graphics reminiscent of a celebrity gossip magazine cover. For the following video, however, I used the Minimal Theme to take a more simple and sleek design approach… because for stories like these, #nofilter is needed.
